Sobremesa – Out of the Ordinary
The art gallery & restaurant Sobremesa has been pushing culinary boundaries for 15 years, inventing new flavors and reimagining classical dishes. It is the lovechild of Rita Maria Sosa, architect, general contractor and chef de cuisine, and her husband, the author and artist Alexander Ferrar.
She made the small space into a cozy, beautiful restaurant that people don’t want to leave, and he draws from his Italian-French heritage to reimagine traditional dishes, the best of the past, but with New World ingredients. One famous example is chicken breast cooked sous vide, in cream of jalapeño sauce, fried bananas & tomato chutney.
A popular starter is their Caprese Salad: fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato, tomato confit, a zigzag of balsamic reduction, and a scoop of basil ice cream. Of their 155 exotic ice cream flavors, that is one of the least bizarre! Others include Dark Beer & Espresso Brownie, Poppy Seed, Almond & Caramelized Orange Peel, and Rose Fig. Those flavors and many more can be found in their three exotic ice creams shops, in Antigua, Zona 14, and San Cristóbal.
Many of the paintings adorning the walls are by Guatemalan artists that Sobremesa represents, and some are by Ferrar himself. His books are also available, and the 24th will be out this year!
