The second week of Lent begins with two vigils and ends with the second processional procession of Lent in La Antigua – Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano.
Friday February 9
As part of the activities of the Second Week of Lent, two vigils take place: the one of Jesus Nazareno of the Reconciliation of the quasi-parish Sacred Heart of Jesus of Los Llanos, Jocotenango as well as the one of the image of Jesús Nazareno de Santa Inés in the Village of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano.
From the village of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano there will be a procession on Sunday, March the 8th. The funeral march dedicated to the image of Jesus Nazareno de Santa Inés has the title “Jesus of Saint Agnes” and was written by Vicente Salazar.
On the day of the vigil, the church opens its doors from 7 AM to 11 PM. As is common with the vigils, there will be a concert of solemn marches in the atrium of the church under Maestro Guillermo Mendizábal which can be heard from 8-10 PM.
Saturday February 10
On this day, the vigil of the Consecrated Image of the Blessed Virgin of Dolores, of the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption, takes place. You will need to visit Jocotenango which is located north of La Antigua in a small settlement awarded to Pedro de Alvarado. Here, the survivors of the flood of 1541 were relocated. In 1571 a small hermitage dedicated to the Virgin of the Asunción was constructed. Subsequently, in 1602 a larger temple was built.
Sunday February 11
Procession
On this day the entrance to and from La Antigua to the capital will be closed for much of the day as it passes close to the church of Santa Inés, from where the procession leaves and enters. The image of Jesus Nazareno de Santa Inés will travel the streets of La Antigua for an estimated 10 hours (although this may be extended).
The village of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano was founded in the 17th century and the first hermitage was opened for religious services in the year 1685. Due to the many earthquakes, the original hermitage was destroyed and the one that was built later was finally opened after being restored in 1985. The patronal feast in honor of Santa Inés del Monte Pulciano is celebrated every year on May 16.
