SKY SEA

All is mutable. Nothing is fixed. Shifting clouds across a vast sky, the endless heave and
crashing froth of waves smashing and sliding up the beach reminds us of all we cannot grasp,
all that exists beyond us through time immeasurable. Without boundaries. No beginning. No
end. We can only surrender to its wonder.
The immediacy of the monoprint technique where ink is worked directly on the plate is suited to
the impermanent mutability of the forms in waves and clouds. Each pass through the press
leaves a trace of what has been removed before more ink is applied. The energy of the gesture
is left in traces, smeared, wiped, reapplied and sent again through the pressure of the press

Eighteen years ago Catherine built a home in Guatemala on the slopes of Volcan de Agua
where she spends six months each year. From this mountainside vantage she watches the
shifting light and atmosphere as the wind moved clouds up the valley and across the sky. The
Pacific Ocean has also been a source of inspiration for her art and, like the sky, a balm to her
spirit.

Catherine Widgery’s environmental sculptures respond to light and wind to make us more
aware of the shifting, subtle energies beyond our grasp. They bring us alive to our surroundings. Beauty is
seen in reflection, projection and refraction, often broken into
fragments so our mind must work to put together the pieces to make sense of what we are
experiencing. In addition to over 50 site-specific public artworks installed across the U.S. and
Canada, numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums, her award-winning
works have been featured on the covers of Sculpture, Landscape Architecture, Espace and
World Sculpture News magazines.
