In August of 2018, Steve Johnson and Billy Burns voyaged from the cornfields of Kansas to Antigua, in Millie, a well-used trolley. Millie would be perfect to transport people from Antigua to their craft brewery, located in nearby Ciudad Vieja. After 2000 miles at 45 m.p.h., and a brand-new paint job, Millie now helps people to and from Cerveceria Catorce, the area’s first craft brewery to incorporate a tasting room, beer garden, and event space, on a spectacular 7-acre coffee farm.
Brewmaster Ben Kent, from Breckenridge, Colorado, recently worked at two breweries in Peru, and saw Cerveceria Catorce as an opportunity to bring his expertise to Guatemala. After installing the brewery’s brewhouse, Ben painstakingly formulated La Catorce’s 5 core beers. Using German malt, and hops from the Pacific Northwest, Ben has created a range of craft ales that appeal to every palate. Craft beer novices love the Chelita Linda Blonde Ale, while hop-fanatics crave the intense Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops that give the Dale Pale Ale notes of mango and passion fruit.
To complement their offerings, La Catorce sought out the most accomplished chefs in the area to create a quality dining experience. Annie and Felix, known for their use of high-quality local ingredients, provide brick-oven pizzas, artisanal sausages, and fresh salads from Thursday to Sunday. On weekends, food trucks offer more variety.
An interior tasting room adjoins the production facility, while the patio offers volcano views, with Fuego providing nightly pyrotechnic shows. Play cornhole on the lawn, while children enjoy the playground built with recycled materials. Adirondack chairs surround campfires every evening, and talented musicians play the amphitheater overlooking avocado trees and hulking volcanoes.
Cerveceria Catorce offers plenty of parking, or Uber is another convenient option, just a 12-minute ride from Antigua. For lovers of craft beer, or for friends and families looking for a great way to spend an afternoon near Antigua, La Catorce is a surefire hit.

Cerveceria Catorce opened its doors outside Cuidad Vieja with the idea to bring world-class products and service to Guatemala. In the few years since its inception the demand for more outlets has brought the brand to the center of Antigua with El Deposito, Zone 4 with 14grados, and coming soon to El Paredon, Playa Catorce Beach Club. Each new project is unique to its location and is executed by the Catorce project manager and Head of Development Fares Perez.
El Deposito has become a staple in the center of Antigua for live music and the best craft beer in town. The open area seating is reminiscent of a German beer garden with delicious food served by our friends and neighbors at Hector’s Bistro. The newly renovated Library Bar inside El Deposito is the perfect place to spend time working or socializing with your favorite people. Live music five nights a week by the area’s best artists creates the perfect atmosphere conveniently located in the center of Antigua.
14grados located just outside the pedestrian street of Zone 4 in Guatemala City opened in 2021 as a Catorce taproom with food by the genius Peter Meng of Sal.gt offering the best handmade charcuterie in all of the Americas. Akin to all affiliated Catorce projects, 14grados boasts live music from local and international acts five nights a week. As a satellite bar to the main brewery, you can always find the freshest Catorce flagship beers as well as the seasonal specialities. As the Catorce brand continues to grow and serve as the premier craft beer in the region our team continues to work diligently to raise the bar for quality and customer service. In the words of our project manager and Head of Development Fares Perez, “With each new location, our philosophy is simple, create a space where we would enjoy spending time. Live music, great service, unique food, and the best beer. We design bars here in Guatemala that would thrive anywhere in the world. It is a pleasure bringing this to the market of my home country and we will never stop innovating and raising the bar as we continue to expand. Salud!
