Asociación SERniña Guatemala: Empowering a New Generation Through Identity and Equity
Asociación SERniña is a Guatemalan non-profit organisation working at the heart of emancipatory education and social justice. Their mission is to dismantle gender inequality by strengthening the “Verdadero SER” (True Self). They believe that by doing so, they can build a world where children and adolescents are empowered to lead their own lives, pursue their dreams, and become the protagonists of their own stories. This is achieved through the empowerment of girls and women, alongside the critical transformation of masculinity in boys, young men, and adults.
Their work focuses on sparking profound social change through comprehensive, community-based education. SERniña is dedicated to ending gender inequality in Guatemala by working hand-in-hand with parents and teachers. Together, they foster a collective environment where girls can develop the skills, knowledge, confidence, and courage needed to make informed life decisions rooted in self-knowledge, self-love, and inner strength.
This approach is brought to life through a pedagogical practice that views the classroom as the ideal space for social transformation and violence prevention. By utilising gradual, scientifically grounded, and psychologically appropriate processes—based on feminist education, masculinities, popular education, and the Mayan Cosmovision—they seek to create fairer communities that defend both human integrity and their ancestral lands.
The ultimate goal of this formative process is for “SERniña women” to develop leadership and autonomy. They learn to recognise themselves as the sole authors of their own histories, guardians of their bodies as personal temples, and warriors who fight for the advancement of women everywhere, guided by the principle of sorority (sisterhood).
