ANTIGUA TO LAKE ATITLAN 4-DAY TREK WITH TREK GUATEMALA
As Inspiring as the Stars Above…
Trek Guatemala’s “Sky Route” Trek is a four-dav journey between two of Guatemala’s most beautiful and compelling destinations: Antigua and Lake Atitlán. The trek traverses the country’s diverse landscapes- from active volcanoes & cloud forests to coffee &avocado farms. But the real highlight of the trip is the total cultural immersion the trek provides guests, who pass through quiet & picturesque Mayan communities along the way. For years, Trek Guatemala has worked closely with these communities, who welcome guests and provide authentic opportunities to experience Mayan culture, from visiting traditional weavers and small-batch coffee farmers to learning how to make handmade tortillas over a campfire.
Each day, guests hike with only a day pack, as luggage is moved from one destination to the next. The trek is supported by a safari-style “glamping” camp that features large canvas tents with queen-size beds, goose-down comforters, delicious food and a full bar. The company’s “trektruck” even features a portable flush toilet & an outdoor hot water shower to rinse off the trail dust at night!
Says guest Sarah Palmer “My favorite part of the trip was sitting around the campfire with a glass of wine after a wonderful day of hiking, watching as the farmers returned from their fields & kids played in nearby fields. It was truly magical to be a part of the community. I feel like I experienced the ‘real’ Guatemala”.
DAY 1: MAYAN SHRINES & CLOUD FOREST
The first day of the trek starts with a visit to the Mavan Shrine “San Simon” and a blessing for a good trip.Guests then hike up through a towering cloud forest canopy full of orchids & bromeliads and cross two mountain peaks before descending
to the first night at “Terra Camp” & comfy tents. After dinner, guests enjoy “s’mores” & drinks around the campfire.
DAY 2: MOUNTAIN PEAKS &FERTILE VALLEYS
Day two sees guests traversing a deep river valley over a hanging footbridge before ascending 3,000 feet to “Fuego Camp”, located in a quiet Mayan village. In the distance, guests enjoy Fuego Volcano’s nighttime show of eruptions while they enjoy a dinner of traditional Guatemalan “Pepián de Pollo” stew.
DAY 3: QUAINT VILLAGES &VOLCANO VIEWS
Day three of the trek takes guests to their highest elevation of 9,000 feet, following a pristine ridge- line that reveals unique birds & plants. The altitude also affords hikers panoramic views of six volcanoes. That evening, guests visit a Mayan women’s cooperative to learn about the ancient tradition of back-strap weaving.
DAY 4: COFEE FARMS & CRYSTAL WATERS
With views of the final destination of Lake Atitlan in the distance, guests drop into a secluded fertile valley to visit a traditional Guatemalan coffee farm, learning how to collect & roast beans. A final push takes guests to an awe-inspiring viewpoint over Lake Atitlán before arriving to the lake shore, concluding their journey. Congratulations, you made it!
