If you are someone who likes to take advantage of the weekends to get your fix of adrenaline, then Antigua and its surroundings can offer you a different type of activity that not only provides you with a good dose of exercise, but that also presents a challenge and an opportunity to explore new places.
Mountain biking is really popular in town (which is no surprise considering the great quantity of hills and mountains that surround the famous Valle de Panchoy) and it represents a perfect way to set off on an adventure.
There are bike tours available every day, one leaving in the morning and one in the afternoon. These tours usually take around 3 or 4 hours depending on the type of tour you choose and the rhythm at which you go.
One of the most popular tours will take you through the villages and small towns that surround Antigua, such as San Pedro las Huertas, San Juan del Obispo, Santa Maria de Jesus and San Antonio. On this tour you’ll be able to see coffee fincasand a macadamia plantation as you go by, as well as enjoying a relatively easy bike ride that won’t wear you out physically.
If you’re looking for more of a challenge there are tours available through private fincas and round the slopes of Agua volcano that may be just what you need.
Pedaling around Antigua and its surroundings is a great way to get some exercise, as well as a way of finding out more about the customs and traditions unique to each place you pass through.
Something important to bear in mind is that it’s always best to go on a tour with someone who has the experience (and patience) to recommend the best and safest routes and times, as well as being prepared to help you out in the case of any unforeseen incident.
Tip:
GT Adventure has tours for beginners and for experts that leave twice a day – at 9am (returning around 1pm) and at 2pm (returning around 6pm). The cost per person is between Q200 and Q225 depending on the type of tour and includes a bilingual guide, use of a professional mountain bike and a helmet.
