Joseph Nance at Panza Verde Gallery.
Joseph Nance is a professional wedding and portrait photographer based in Antigua Guatemala. His narrative approach to his work in photography has gained recognition in international publications, galleries and photography competitions. Throughout his travels, Joseph photographs everyday moments in distant places. Its unique perspective captures the people, the landscape and the culture of unknown places. In his photographs, untold stories arise that otherwise would not be told. From street vendors to surfers and taxi drivers to fellow travellers, Joseph’s work offers an intimate window to the cultures of distant lands.
In his own words
“I left Antigua with a backpack that only contained a newspaper, some rolls of film and a camera older than me, in what would end up being a journey of deep introspection and spiritual healing. I didn’t have a plan and a small idea of where I was one would happen. All I knew was that I was going to try to rediscover my love for photography in a place and in a way unknown to me. This body of work is a story composed of a photo every day of my backpacking trip through the islands of Indonesia. Each shot represents a moment of my inner journey during the trip and is a reflection of the unique cultures and villages that make up Indonesia. At a time when the islands of Bali, Lombok and Gilis are invaded by bloggers, influencers and digital photographers, I disconnected from all digital media, left my electronics at home and moved around the world one day at a time, with Just my movie camera and my diary. I hope that the spectators of this work group experience a perspective of the islands free of digital distraction, cultural appropriation and gentrification of these frequently visited places. Indonesia taught me things that I would otherwise have missed. I traveled with my eyes, heart and ears wide open, and grew up. These photos are the visual diary of a healing heart. ”
