Upcoming: The Second Festival Fridas Celebrating 30 Years of Fridas in Antigua Guatemala
The second Festival Fridas is coming up, celebrating 30 years of Fridas here in Antigua Guatemala. The festival runs from November 19–22. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Maggie Mondragón, Tatiana Palomo, and Victoria González, three of the four partners of Fridas.

Maggie explained that it was 30 years ago, in 1995, that she and her business partner Lola Aycinena opened a small taco restaurant and bar on 4a Calle, near La Bodegona. With its great live music, lively vibe, and delicious food, it brought a new concept to Antigua. It wasn’t long before they moved to much larger premises under the Arch on 5a Avenida, and soon Fridas became an Antigua legend. In recent years, Fridas has spread its wings, opening several locations in Guatemala City.
Back to the Festival Fridas here in Antigua. Tatiana told me, “We’ve had restaurants for thirty years, but the Festival Fridas is the expression of our essence — what we stand for, what we value, and how we honour Antigua. It’s the place that has given us life, and we adore it.”
Festival Fridas Schedule
Wednesday, November 19
The Festival Fridas opens with a gastronomic dinner and rituals at the Capuchinas Ruins. Celebrated chefs including Debbie Fadul, Claudia Lara, and Martina Marré will prepare this very special dinner. The culinary experience begins at 6 PM, featuring mezcal, cocktails, and rituals.
Thursday, November 20
Perhaps the highlight of the festival — which celebrates both 30 years of Fridas and the spirit of Frida Kahlo in Antigua — will be a performance by legendary Mexican singer Lila Downs at the Ermita de la Santa Cruz.
Lila Downs is one of Latin America’s most influential artists. Whether performing a powerful mariachi song, a soulful bolero, or a sensual jazz melody, this GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter captivates audiences with her unmistakable charisma and inspiring storytelling. She sings in Spanish, English, and several Indigenous languages.
Also performing are Sara Curruchic and Mercedes Escobar. “Mercedes has a special place in our hearts,” Maggie shared. “She’s been playing here forever — amazingly talented.” In fact, Mercedes has recently been touring with Gaby Moreno.
Friday, November 21
Dimensiones Fridas transforms Antigua into an open-air art scene, with exhibitions throughout the city. Curators including Willy Posadas of Antigua Viva and Willy Monsanto will participate.
Saturday, November 22
The festival culminates with La Fiesta Solaris. For lovers of dance music, this promises to be an unforgettable event — a 12-hour celebration running from 6 PM to 6 AM. The location remains a secret for now, but rest assured, all will be revealed once you book!

As Maggie told me, “Fridas was founded by two women, and now it’s owned by four. It’s very important to us to continue the legacy of women’s entrepreneurship.”
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to UPAVIM (Unidos para Vivir Mejor). Click to learn more or to donate.
