La Antigua has changed so much since I first moved here in 2001. One of the most notable changes has been the relentless flood of chain stores that have opened their doors. In many ways it’s a great pity. Rents have sky rocketed and many family owned businesses have been forced out.
However, it was great spending some time drinking coffee with Francisco Quiroa, (Pancho to his friends) who is the manager of Ferretería España, learning about his love for La Antigua and its history, which is evident and heart-warming.
Formerly known as Misceláneo, it opened its doors way back in 1918 in 6th Avenue North #6, where the Londoner Pub is now situated. The original owner Alfredo Jurado sold cloth, corn, coffee, sugar and hand tools as well as guns, ammunition, parts for carts and even horseshoes.
Ferretería España is Born
In 1950, someone in the family who had recently arrived from Santander bought Misceláneo and renamed it Ferretería España. Later in 1975, they bought the business back. The following year the mighty 7.5 magnitude earthquake shook and severely damaged La Antigua. Luckily, the family had recently bought a property where Ferretería España now stands on the corner of Calzada Santa Lucía close to La Bodegona.
Ferretería España is the most centrally located hardware store in La Antigua. It stocks almost everything you would need for your home or business. A big change came in 2015 when House & Green products were introduced on the second floor. Now you don’t need to make that trip to Guatemala City for your cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery!
However, Ferretería España still has its Antigua roots. I often see Pancho at the entrance welcoming and chatting to his customers. (He also speaks fluent English.)
The tradition lives on!
