In the Baja Verapaz region, festivities dedicated to the patron saint Santiago Apostol are celebrated during the month of July every year and – during the inauguration of the town fair in Cubulco – various traditional dances are performed, including a very well-known one called the ‘Baile de la Caxuxa’.
In this performance, two jokers dressed as cowboys dance el baile del torito amongst the other traditional dancers until they manage to catch the ‘torito’ (representation of a bull). Inevitably, during the celebrations these cowboys get more than a little tipsy and the atmosphere is enlivened by the jokes and interactions that they have with the spectators.
