DESNUDO, a solo show featuring the drawings of Eve Chayes Lyman will open at El Meson Panza Verde on Wednesday July 11th. There will be an reception with cocktails from 5-8 pm. The show will be up until the 10th of August.
This series of fluid, expressionistic works on paper by Eve Chayes Lyman is created using live models. They have an immediacy to them – fresh, spontaneous and risky. The inspiration for all of these drawings and much of her work in general is found in the figure, with its infinite capacity to express and embody the complexity of what it means to be human. Her art is deeply emotional in nature. As she says, “The naked body, vulnerable, unencumbered by context, time or place, has been a powerful vehicle, since time immemorial, for the depths of emotion and psyche contained within us all.”
Lyman seeks the unknown and the unexpected which gives her drawings a sense of freedom and excitement. Like she says:
“What happens on my paper is almost an alchemical process, combining what is in my psyche with what I see in front of me. The third element is the medium itself, charcoal, pastel, pen, ink, watercolor, in any combination. I try to ride the wave… allowing each element an unfiltered, uncontrolled freedom, knowing that at any moment I could crash and burn… and I often do. It is a painful exhilarating process.”
Lyman is an artist, documentary photographer, videographer and activist. She divides her time between Los Angeles and Guatemala, where she has just finished building a house and studio outside of Antigua. This will be her first show in Guatemala. You can see her work here.
