Social Work in Antigua:
Some of the visitors who spend time in La Antigua search for ways to give back by lending their time, talents, and energy to different community projects around Guatemala – and some help finding those opportunities could certainly come in handy. Buena Onda – a non-profit organization and volunteer resource center (whose name means roughly “great vibes” or “cool deal”) – works with smaller organizations to recruit and promote volunteers who have the skills, interests, commitment, and passion to support the wonderful work taking place in La Antigua, at Lake Atitlán, and in Guatemala City.
What is Buena Onda?
Buena Onda exists to help the volunteer experience in Guatemala evolve to a new level – both for the volunteers themselves and for the organizations that are seeking the skills and knowledge that volunteers have to offer. Buena Onda connects organizations with volunteers who want to offer their abilities in certain areas, thereby increasing volunteer motivation and follow-through.
Volunteering:
In the end, the goal is to ensure that the volunteer experience is productive and engaging, that the people involved have a great experience that will translate into good reviews for the organization, and that more people are willing to be a part of the process.
The ability of all team members to act responsibly and to show integrity both within and outside the workplace is key to collaboratively building an impressive, inspirational, and motivating experience for volunteers, organizational staff, and community members. Additionally, Buena Onda aims to build organizational capacity in research and evaluation, areas within the non-profit sector that are often ignored or out of reach because of a lack of resources and/or technical expertise.
The basic goal of Buena Onda is to promote volunteering that truly has an impact – and it achieves this through respectful community engagement in Guatemala, as well as by reducing the administrative burdens on non-profit organizations by facilitating connections between volunteers and local organizations based on mutual skills, interests, and needs.
