Often overlooked as a gateway to other villages on Lake Atitlan such as San Pedro and San Marcos, it’s worth spending a night or two in Panajachel. Unlike the other villages around the lake, Panjachel is not named after a Catholic Saint. Actually, its name derives from the Kaqchikel language and roughly translates to “place of the Matasanos,” the white sapote fruit tree which can be found when in season throughout Guatemala.
Virtually every visitor walks along the busy Calle Santander and the many stalls selling virtually the same identical tee-shirts and gifts! It’s a put off, but really Panajachel has much to offer.
Eight reasons to visit Panajachel
1.Visit the beautiful stone fronted San Francisco church. Dating back to the 1600s the original façade is still standing and holds regular services.
2. Many say that the view from the lake at Panajachel is the most rewarding. Double that with a drink or two at the Sunset Bar at the end of Calle Santander.
3. Go zip lining at the Atitlan Nature Reserve. You’ll get a magical view of the lake! Plus, they have hiking trails and a butterfly sanctuary.
4. Spend a little time at Casa Cakchiquel. This former Inn; now a cultural Centre was built in the late 1940’s by the Swedish countess Aimée Spens. There are some stunning photos of the guests; people really knew how to dress in those days! Plus, some engrossing photos and postcards of Panajachel and its population going back to the early twentieth century.
5. For some of the best coffee around the lake, pop in to the Crossroads Café. It’s the only café I know of anywhere that closes for lunch! Spending time with the owner Michael is an experience in itself.
6.If you’re looking for the ultimate in exhilaration, then go paragliding. I really can’t think of a more awesome way of being one with the lake and it’s three majestic volcanoes.
7. Panajachel has some pretty restaurants and by lake standards a great nightlife. Pana Rock is the place to go for live music, and as for discos, try El Aleph.
8. Without doubt, Panajachel is a great base if you wish to take day trips to the other villages around the lake. With its abundance of restaurants and a good selection of hotels, it a sound choice.
Thanks to Selina Atitlan for hosting me. For regular shuttle service from Antigua I suggest using Atitrans. They offer both a shared and private shuttles.
