Solve the City: The Tour That Turns Antigua Into a Puzzle
In a city known for its cobblestone streets, pastel facades, and dramatic volcano views, exploring can easily become a checklist of landmarks. But a growing number of visitors to Antigua are discovering a far more interactive way to experience its history…by turning the entire city into a puzzle.

Created by local tour operator Xplore Antigua, Mysteries of Antigua Guatemala is a self-guided historical scavenger hunt that blends storytelling, problem-solving, and cultural discovery into one immersive adventure. It’s part treasure hunt, part outdoor escape room, and part living history lesson…designed to engage both visitors and locals alike in a new way.
Participants begin their mission with a carefully crafted satchel of clues and props before heading into the streets. From there, teams navigate through iconic landmarks, tucked-away plazas, historic churches, and Mayan shrines…solving riddles that reveal the stories behind the stones. Each puzzle unlocks a new location, weaving together themes of colonial architecture, local legends, volcanic landscapes, and Guatemalan culture.

One recent guest described the experience as “far and away the best way to explore Antigua we could have imagined, a treasure hunt woven through the heart of the city. We weren’t just seeing the city… we were solving it.”
Unlike traditional tours, there is no rush and no guide holding up a flag. Teams move at their own pace, stopping for coffee, browsing artisan markets, or lingering in a plaza when inspiration strikes. Most groups complete the hunt in two to three hours, though many stretch it into a full afternoon of exploration.
For families, the format has proven especially powerful. “We did it as a family with kids and teens, and not once did anyone say they were bored. It didn’t even feel like three hours had passed, which is basically a parenting miracle,” one parent shared.

The puzzles are intentionally designed to challenge without frustrating. “It felt like we were on our own Amazing Race through Antigua,” another guest explained. “The clues were just challenging enough to make every ‘aha!’ moment feel earned, and we learned so much without it ever feeling like a tour.”
What sets the experience apart is the craftsmanship behind it. From cleverly designed riddles to hands-on elements that evoke the thrill of cracking codes, participants consistently comment on the care poured into its creation. “The puzzles were incredibly well designed and thoughtful. You can feel the love and creativity behind it. It took us to places we never would have discovered on our own, and now we see Antigua in a completely different way.”

In a city where history lives in every archway and courtyard, Mysteries of Antigua offers something rare: active participation. Instead of simply walking past centuries of stories, participants decode them, piece by piece. The result is not just a tour, but a shared adventure. One that transforms sightseeing into discovery, and visitors into explorers.
