Probably the highlight of the Fridas Festival, which celebrates 30 years of Frida Kahlo in Antigua Guatemala, will be the performance by legendary Mexican singer Lila Downs at the Ermita de la Santa Cruz, here in Antigua Guatemala.
Lila Downs is one of Latin America’s most influential artists. Whether with a powerful mariachi song, a soulful bolero, or a sensual jazz melody, this GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter captivates audiences with her unmistakable charisma and inspiring stories. Singing in Spanish, English, and several Native American languages, Downs is known for her impressive vocal range and joyful performances with her longtime band. She grew up between Minnesota and Mexico, the daughter of a Scottish-American father and a Mixtec mother. Drawing on her multicultural heritage, Downs’s songs often focus on justice, immigration, and women’s issues. “Downs is an accomplished artist whose three-octave vocal range shines in songs of comedy or tragedy, whether from Central America or Glasgow” (The Guardian).
Sara Curruchic and Mercedes Escobar will also be performing.
It will be a very special night. The Ermita de la Santa Cruz will be a stunning setting for this concert. I recommend bringing a blanket, as it can get a bit chilly at this time of year.
