We are now three months in since Covid-19 reached Guatemala. Cases and deaths unfortunately are increasing daily. Apoyo Guate contacted Qué Pasa asking for us to let the wider community know about their work. We are delighted to do this. This is their story!
“The grassroots community response to the economic crisis that is unfolding in Guatemala as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions has been a truly inspiring show of collaboration and solidarity. Countless relief projects and initiatives have arisen across the country (and internationally!) in recent months, led by organizations, businesses and individuals focused on getting food and basic necessities to those who have been hit the hardest by national restrictions on individual movement, local businesses, and social interaction.
We created Apoyo Guate to facilitate connections between these community projects and those looking for ways to provide support to Guatemalan communities during the crisis. Apoyo Guate is a space where community projects can post information about their initiatives and what kind of support they are most in need of; and those looking for ways to help can browse the listings and connect, and can also provide their own details to be listed on our Volunteers page.
We have over 35 initiatives currently posted, with a focus on supporting the immediate provision of food and health essentials to communities across Guatemala, as well as options to provide support in the form of monetary donations and volunteer power. Apoyo Guate is also helping to promote different community projects each week via our social media channels (Facebook and Instagram: @apoyoguateproyecto), with a ‘Spotlight’ publication on the work being done and impact achieved. Check out our most recent Spotlight here!
